Intelligent File Allocation

File creation and extension resulting from normal operations are major causes of fragmentation. Most applications do not use the operating system features to search for contiguous free space, so new files are fragmented when they are created and there is no room for contiguous growth. As a result, file extensions often lead to further file fragmentation.

UltraDisk uses an intelligent algorithm that allocates file space so the operating system is forced to make every effort to create and extend files contiguously. UltraDisk also initially allocates extra disk space to open files for additional growth without the need for repetitive 'fragment-forming' extension requests. In addition, UltraDisk checks the available free space. If disk conditions or space allow, it automatically over-allocates space in anticipation of file growth. (See figure 1).

Optimising Open Files

(UltraDisk as Add-on Technology) 
For years, on-line software has been available to defragment closed files on OpenVMS systems. UltraDisk - as add-on software to Raxco's PerfectDisk - sets a new standard by enabling the defragmenting and optionally repositioning of open files.

UltraDisk is the solution to the open-file defragmentation dilemma experienced by many busy IT shops. How do you defragment an open file?

UltraDisk employs a server on every node in a cluster. These servers communicate with Raxco's PerfectDisk disk defragmentation software. If a file is open while PerfectDisk is trying to move it, UltraDisk ensures that all writes to the original file are shadowed to the copy.

Once there are two identical copies of the file on disk, PerfectDisk rewrites the index header to point to the new file.

Additional UltraDisk activities guarantee that all users accessing the moved file are updated with the latest location information.

Disk Optimisation

In addition to the open file defragmentation capability, the UltraDisk/PerfectDisk combination delivers Raxco's unique optimisation technology, which minimises average seek time. Optimisation is the placement of files on disk, based on usage patterns. Unaccessed files are moved to the disk periphery (high and low LBNs) to minimise average head seek time. Raxco's patented technology (U.S. Patent No. 5,398,142) delays fragmentation, consolidates free space and improves I/O throughput.
